BARD ON THE BEACH ANNOUNCES 2005 SEASON

VANCOUVER, B.C: Artistic Director Christopher Gaze is pleased to announce the playbill for Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival's 16th season which runs June 2 through September 25, 2005. Playing in repertory in the 520-seat Mainstage tent will be the classic romantic comedy As You Like It directed by Robert McQueen and the witty romance Love's Labour's Lost directed by Michael Shamata. In the 240-seat Douglas Campbell Studio Stage tent, Bard will go to repertory for the first time presenting an intimate staging of Shakespeare's dramatic tragedy, Hamlet, paired with the Tom Stoppard's Tony Award-winning, 20th century comic look at theHamlet tale, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Both Studioproductions will be staged by Dean Paul Gibson.

Love at first sight, exile, disguise and misplaced affections blend deliciously in As You Like It where Rosalind, dressed as a boy, teaches her unsuspecting suitor Orlando how to woo. In Love's Labour's Lost, the love-struck King and his Lords must devise secretive (and hilarious) ways to pursue their favorite ladies because they recently made a pledge to forsake female company. Murder, a hasty marriage and a ghost's demand for revenge set the scene for the great tragedy Hamlet, as the Prince of

Denmark seeks to expose his Uncle's heinous deed. In contrast, Tom Stoppard's fabulously inventive modern comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead takes us behind-the-scenes as two of Shakespeare's minor characters become both audience and actors in Hamlet drama.
