Vietjet orders an additional six Airbus A321 aircraft

Theodore Koumelis - 22 June 2015

Since the beginning of the year, a total of six A320 and A321 aircraft have been delivered to Vietjet from the initial order and as per the contractual agreement, Vietjet will continue to receive between six to 12 aircrafts every year till the order is complete

SINGAPORE – Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company has inked a deal at the Paris Air Show to purchase six additional Airbus A321 single-aisle jets worth a total of US$682 million. The aircraft will be delivered in 2017 to meet the airline’s rapid growth.

The contract was signed by Vietjet’s President and CEO, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and President and CEO of AirbusFabrice Bregier in Paris. The purchase of these A321s, one of the most modern single-aisle aircrafts produced by Airbus, is in addition to the deal made last February by Vietjet for an order of 100 aircraft with Airbus.

Since the beginning of the year, a total of six A320 and A321 aircraft have been delivered to Vietjet from the initial order and as per the contractual agreement, Vietjet will continue to receive between six to 12 aircrafts every year till the order is complete.

Speaking at the event, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said, “Vietjet has grown faster than expected in the last few years and our previous aircraft purchasing plans could not keep up with the growing demand. In March 2015, we received our first A321 aircraft, the 9,000th aircraft made by Airbus, as part of our original contract. This jet has already been put into operation safely and effectively.

Also speaking at the event, Fabrice Bregier said: “We are pleased to see Vietjet renewing its confidence in Airbus by enlarging their A320 family fleet. The A320 family offers the lowest operating costs in the single-aisle market and this latest order from Vietjet further confirms the growing popularity of the A321 as the largest member of the product line."

Together, Airbus’ A320 and A321 have become the world’s best-selling, modern single-aisle products, with more than 10,200 aircraft ordered and more than 6,000 aircraft delivered to airlines worldwide to date.

Vietjet currently operates a fleet of 25 Airbus aircraft across 32 routes domestically and internationally. The airline plans to expand its network across the Asia-Pacific region, with the potential to open long-haul flights to Europe. The airline offers express check-in at all airports for passengers over 65 years of age, expectant mothers, and families travelling with infants. These passengers are encouraged to approach Vietjet’s express check-in counters for priority boarding and assistance with carry-on baggage.

VietJet Air is a start-up low-cost carrier based in Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport,Vietnam. The carrier began operating on 25-Dec-2011, after several delayed attempts, initially with 3 A320 aircraft to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. VietJet had planned to utilise the AirAsia brand after receiving an investment from the Malysian LCC but was forced to go ahead with the VietJet brand when AirAsia was denied regulatory approvals.

Vietnam’s VietJetAir has finalised a major order for the A320 Family to meet its future expansion plans. The purchase agreement covers firm orders for 42 A320neo, 14 A320ceo and 7 A321ceo, plus 30 purchase rights. In addition the airline will lease eight more A320 Family aircraft from third party lessors.
The order was finalised today at the Singapore Airshow by Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Vice Chairwoman and CEO, VietJetAir and Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO, Airbus. The signing was witnessed by Dinh La Thang, Minister of Transport of Vietnam and Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN.

“The A320 has proven to be extremely efficient in service with VietJetAir and is a favourite with our passengers,” said Luu Duc Khanh, Managing Director, VietJetAir. “Based on this experience, we look forward to developing our business across the Asia-Pacific region. Airbus will be our strategic partner and provide us with the most economic and comfortable aircraft and coordinate with VietJetAir in relevant training programs.”

"We are pleased to finalise our first purchase agreement with VietJetAir,” said Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO, Airbus. “This order reinforces the A320 Family‘s position as the preferred choice in the single aisle market, both for full service and low cost carriers. We look forward to working with VietJetAir as it brings ever more affordable air travel to the fast growing South East Asian market.”

VietJetAir took to the skies in 2011 and is the first private airline in Vietnam to operate domestic and international flights. Today the airline operates a fleet of 11 leased A320s on a network covering 20 routes, including domestic destinations, Bangkok, Seoul and Kunming in China.
