White Elephants?

White Elephant or Political Football?Woodwards store front

Not being political animals, we whave difficulty understanding why certain obvious decisions are left dormant, or hanging in suspended animation for decades, in a city like Vancouver, British Columbia. For example, why is the Woodwards Department Store building, once the economic engine of Hastings Street and a Christmas Fantasyland for kids of my era, becoming even more of an eyesore and bad joke with each passing year?

Why are weeds growing on Arbutus Street and the Kerrisdale cooridor railway right of way, when a convenient above ground LRT (like in Calgary or Portland) could whisk people to the City of Richmond and Vancouver International Airport? Interurban trams ran on the same line from City Centre to Marpole and Steveston Village 60 years ago. Why not now? There are more White Elephants in the city and area, but we want to hear from you on these two for starters.

Some of our readers have brought up these two topics, and we invite your feedback, pro and con. Please e-mail BC Scene Magazine: airhwy@dowco.com, fax (604) 681-6595.
