DKNY//JEANS Outdoor Concert Series delivers 10-days of unbelievable live music during annual TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival

WHISTLER, BC, March 23 2004 ö Whistler Resort is set to explode into spring with a mega-ton blast of hypnotic beats and electric anthems know as the DKNY//JEANS Outdoor Concert Series. The biggest free show in Canada, the DKNY//JEANS Outdoor Concert Series features an action-packed line-up of more than 30 acts ö from the Grammy-performing Black Eyed Peas, to the platinum selling Bif Naked and GOB, and the best emerging talent, including Juno-nominated Sweatshop Union and Lillix. Rocking huge crowds daily, the DKNY//JEANS Outdoor Concert Series is the hub of the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, taking place in beautiful Whistler Resort from April 16-25.

Supersuckers

 

Having rocked with legends including Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Willie Nelson and Steve Earle, and performed on ãThe Tonight Showä, the Supersuckers serve up a smorgasbord of great rock music.

 

 

 

Pocket Dwellers

 

An eight piece ensemble from diverse musical backgrounds, the Pocket Dwellers blend jazz, rock and hip-hop into a unique sound that has lead them to open for the likes of Maceo Parker, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Wide Mouth Mason, The Rascalz, and jazz great Charlie Hunter.

 

 

 

The Formula

 

A four-piece rock band from New Westminster, BC, the Formula came together in 2003 and shortly afterwards were signed by B & C Entertainment. Formula's sound is characterized by a pop sensibility shared by artists like Coldplay, Radiohead and the Strokes.

Kia Kadiri

 

From soulful singing to rap to spoken word, Kia Kadiri does it all. She has opened for such heavyweights as Rahzel, Mix Master Mike, Swollen Members, Choclair, Spearhead, and Ivana Santilli, and has recorded tracks with Moka Only and Prevail, Kinnie Starr, Wicked Lester and Stink Mitt.

 

 

 

Mat the Alien

 

Notorious for his seamless cuts, effortless scratching and distinctive selection this Whistler local has played all over the world, including England, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Iceland, and the United States. Mat has spun with the likes of Afrikaa Bambaata, del ö The Herbaliser, Roots Manuva, The Allies-dj craze, The Rascalz, Bad Company, Rahzel, and Q-Bert.

 

 

 

Emotionz

 

One of the most versatile MCs representing the west coast, Emotionz boasts a huge vocal range and musical styling. A dynamic live performer, Emotionz has toured Europe, the U.S. and Canada in the last few years.

 

 

 

DJ Hedspin

 

Host of THE SHOW - the longest running hip hop show in Vancouver (15 years) ö DJ Hedspin has opened for artists such as Jurassic 5, De La Soul, Talib Kweli, Souls Of Mischief, Kid Koala and Snoop Doggy Dog, to name a few. He is currently working with UK Rock Steady Beatbox Legend Killa Kela.

 

 

 

Project MK Ultra

 

On stage, the MK-Ultra show is a combination of spit-fire freestyle ingenuity, new school lyricism and banger beats. MK-Ultra has performed with the likes of Del the Funkee Homosapien, Tajai, Jeru the Damaja, Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, K-OS, Killa Kela, DJ Swamp, DJ Craze, Fourth World Occupants, A.M.P., Manik, OS12, Kia Kadiri, Curtis Santiago, Josh Martinez, Ink Operated, Sweatshop Union, Rumble and many others.

Social Code

 

This four-man crew is known for rocking crowds in their native Canada. Now living in Los Angeles, where theyâre recording their debut album for release on Interscope Records in 2004, Social Code is bringing the hardcore sound back to Canada for the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival.

 

 

 

Paudar

 

PAUDAR plays heavy rock in the vein of the Foo Fighters and Tool. A four-piece band from Western Canada, PAUDAR's motto is ãplug your ears if it gets too loud, and laugh out loud when it gets too heavy.ä

 

 

 

Rally Car

 

Rally Car produces a new heavy melodic rock sound not pressured or influenced by current trends. At the forefront of the Vancouver music scene, Rally Car is in high demand at clubs and gets regular play on British Columbia and Alberta radio stations.

Sweatshop Union

 

This Juno-nominated act blends diverse vocal styles and crisp soulful beats, and are described as the breath of fresh air that hip-hop fans have been waiting for. Originally operating as four independent units (Kyprios, Dirty Circus, Creative Minds, and Innocent Bystanders), the Sweatshop Union Collective came together to push the boundaries of hip-hop and is set to embark on their first North American and European tour.

 

 

 

Graph Nobel

 

Graph Nobelâs songs are enduring, intelligent, thoughtful variations on relationships and urban observations. Her music is hip-hop based with pop overtones, in the tradition of other Canadian new school artists Saukrates, Nelly Furtado, Esthero, the New Deal, BranVan2000, Glen Lewis and Jellystone.

 

 

 

Groundwerk

 

Groundwerk is the brainchild of Montreal producer and DJ, Grandtheft, one of the most in-demand urban music producers in the Montreal area. Groundwerk has been contributing tracks to compilation CDs and are working on a full length CD due for release in the summer of 2004.

 

 

 

The Front

 

Drawing inspiration from hip-hop, jazz, rock, soul and gospel, The Front blends their diverse roots into a 5-man explosion of powerful rhythm with rapid-fire MCs, and has been ranked as one of the top-10 bands in Vancouver by the Vancouver Sun music critics.

CFOX Seeds Contest Winners

 

Vancouverâs best rock station ö CFOX 99.3 FM ö has hosted their annual Seeds Contest for nearly 30 years. The contest invites bands from across lower mainland British Columbia to compete for the title of ÎSeeds Contest Winnersâ. A panel of music industry experts determined this yearâs winners: Everything After (formerly Union One), Tourist, The Solution, Suspect, State of Shock. With a reputation for launching the careers of up-and-coming performers, one of these bands could be the next Nickelback or Default ö Seeds Winners from years gone by!

Bif Naked

 

Confrontational and tattooed gold recording rocker Bif Naked has a dynamic and irrepressible presence on-and-off the stage. Bif and her band have rocked fans across the world with her edgy and personal songs.

 

 

 

Soma City Ward

 

Opening for Bif Naked at her request, Soma City Ward is known for delivering raucously rocking performances and is a favourite in the Vancouver club scene.

 

 

 

Lillix

 

An all-female band nominated for two Juno Awards (New Group of the Year and Pop Album of the Year), Lillix is set to strike North American audiences with their rambunctious, pop-infused rock and roll on Falling Uphill, the band's Maverick Records debut.

GOB

 

Vancouver-based Platinum pop-punk quartet GOB boasts three years on the Warped Tour and is poised for continued stardom with the release of ÎFoot in Mouth Diseaseâ ö their first album for Arista Records.

Black Eyed Peas

 

From countless TV performances ö including Saturday Night Live ö to sold-out shows, and fans world-wide, the Grammy-nominated Black Eyed Peas have taken the hip-hop world by storm and are set to lay down their funkafied vibe in Whistler.

 

 

 

Kyprios

 

Vancouver native Kyprios is an MC who delivers a unique brand of hip-hop that seamlessly blends rapping, singing and harmonizing. A member of Sweatshop Union and a mainstay in the Vancity underground scene, Kyprio's work has caught the recognition of fans and critics with a renaissance style of rhyming laced with socially conscious lyrics.

Vinyl Ritchie

 

Vinyl Ritchie a.k.a. Scott Arkwell has been a Vancouver favourite for over a decade. Ritchie has proven himself to be the master of hip hop, house and with his eclectic mix of styles, he can go from AC/DC to dance hall classics in the blink of an eye.

 

 

 

Curtis Santiago

 

Winner of the 2003 Galaxie Rising Stars award, Curtis Santiago delivers smooth vocal stylings, and cool beats. Curtis has worked with a variety of artists including Swollen Members, Kyprios and Vinyl Ritchie.

 

 

 

Lady Precise

 

A favourite of the Vancouver music scene, Lady Precise has opened for the likes of Roy Ayers, Mix Master Mike, DJ Q-Bert, Spearhead, Culture, Swollen Members, and Holly McNarland.

 

 

 

Natasha Thirsk

 

Formerly of the Dirtmitts, Natasha is now focusing on her solo career and writing songs that boldly combine sounds like Portishead and the rawness of Blond Redhead. Her ideas are laden with vocals that thread her tracks with a silken yet tarnished feel that endeavour to be sultry yet certainly not slack.

 

 

 

MC Rumble

 

Growing up with Swollen Members, MC Rumble is the MC Battle King of Vancouver for 6 years running. His style is hardcore mixed with party rock.

 

 

 

Jabulani

 

Jabulani ö meaning Îbe happyâ in the Africaâs Ndebele language - is a 14-member world rhythm youth ensemble whose concert credits include gigs at the Vancouver Folk Fest and the Commodore Ballroom. Hammering innocently away on marimbas and drums, this group tackles Afro-Cuban, Brazilian samba and dejembe rhythms.

Xavier Rudd

 

Hailing from Australia, Xavier has a strong affinity for the beauty and naturalness of his surrounds. Know as the Jack Johnson from down under, Ruddâs sound is very accessible with a driving, toe tapping beat full of sweet harmonies, delicious melodies, and amazing didgeridoo playing.

 

 

 

The Beautiful Girls

 

At the forefront of the new roots and groove music movement, The Beautiful Girls blend their affection for hip-hop and reggae with their love of real blues and roots. The band brings a mellow and foxy feel to everything they touch.

 

 

 

Sekiden

 

Leaving Australia for a North American tour in 2004, Sekidenâs sound has been described as perfect pop. With a penchant for electronic synthesizers and keyboards of the late 70âs and early 80âs, Sekiden have developed their own brand of analogue pop thatâs smart and infectious.
