World Championship Dancers to Compete in Vancouver Open

Dancing With The Stars Celebrities Among Event Adjudicators

Professional, competitive and aspiring dancers from around the world and across town will gather in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver's BC Ballroom this October 28 and 29 to take part in the first Vancouver Open Dancesport Championship.

With an emphasis on the professional category, this will be a unique opportunity for professional level dancers in British Columbia to compete with their peers from around the world on their home turf as the spacious 50' by 75' BC Ballroom dance floor throngs with colourfully clad local, national and international competitors. With many of the top couples in all categories from the US and Europe, local dancers will have an opportunity to perform to very high standards indeed.

The international stars scheduled to take part in and adjudicate the Vancouver Open represent a galaxy of US, European and World championship finalists and winners, Emmy Award nominees and participants in the acclaimed ABC television series Dancing With The Stars.  Allan Tonrsberg, a judge with Denmark's Dancing With The Stars and Charlotte Jorgensen, a runner-up on the second season of ABC's Dancing With The Stars, are among the judges for the Vancouver event.

As many as 300 couples, up to 100 of them locals, will vie for honours at professional, pro-am and amateur levels in four program categories. The Standard program features the slow waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep; the Latin program showcases the cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jive; the Rhythm program presents cha cha, bolero, rumba, mambo and swing; and the Smooth program, which focuses on the slow waltz, tango, Viennese Waltz and foxtrot.

The Vancouver Open Dancesport Championship is sanctioned by the Canadian Dance & Dance Sport Council and the Canadian Amateur Dancesport Association. The Vancouver Open is a member of the Dancesport Superbowl Series.

Registration for the 2006 Vancouver Open Dancesport Championship will range from $30 to $90 per couple. All rounds of all events are run on the same day. All competitors, local and visiting, are competing against each other. After the initial rounds, twelve couples make the semi-finals in each category, with six couples moving to the finals to be ranked from first to sixth place.

The public will be welcome at all competition rounds, with admission ranging from $35 to $150.  Tickets are now on sale at www.vancouveropen.ca.
